contest entry

Mennan Idaho, 7.4.11, f/9.0, 1/200

I am all about trying to get a natural photo with the least amount of editing. I was really trying to think of photos that best depict the 4th of July and a summer day. We were waiting for the fireworks to start and I loved this natural shot. If you blow up the pic you can see my mom's dirty summer feet perfectly...totally captures the moment.
I chose to do the photographics society contest because I really liked the celebration theme. All through out the weekend I was thinking of creative celebration pics. I submitted my entry July 5 and I won for unedited photo!!! That was really exciting and fun for me!

lighting

Blurred Lights: I took this over a bridge next to my apt. There was only one car and I liked the orange, yellow, and red effect I got on the far left.
6.12.11; Rexburg,ID.; f/3.5; 5.0; Canon t2i
Light Sketching: I stood in my bedroom and wrote out me. Before I darkened this image there was a ghost like image of me in it as well. This took me a few tries to actually spell out the word and make it look like I wanted it to.
6.12.11; Rexburg, ID.; f/ 4/0; 10.0; Canon t2i

Camera Motion: As you can see I was watching the E! channel on tv. I moved focused my lens in and out very slowly and got this crazy image.
6.13.11;Rexburg, ID.; f/22.0; 5.0, canont2i
Light Painting: I put some oranges in my bathroom and stood in the shower and tried to light up the oranges. I really liked the shadows I got by doing this.

scanography

1. My husband's Guatemalan souvenirs
2. My great grandma's vintage jewelry
This was an interesting project. Sometimes the shirt I was using to cover everything was difficult to work with. I tried a couple scans on each of these to try to get the best look I could. Things still turned out blurry but I did my best. For the Guatemala one I just adjusted the colors- added a lot of black and a lot of saturation.
For the love one I combine both the images together and cropped it. I added a lot of sats and black back in and clarity. I liked the way the jewelry turned out on the scanner.

edge effects

1. Elyse; Sandy, Utah; 6/3/11; f/8.0; 1/60
2. Baby Stedson; Sandy, Utah; 6/3/11; f/5.6; 1/200
3. My pregnant Aunt; Sandy, Ut.; 6/3/11; f/5.6; 1/100

For Elyse, I just adjusted the coloring in Bridge. Her theme color of her wedding was lime green so I
created a burned border with a very line lime green line and then just added some font to it using the same color I used for the burned edge.
Baby Stedson I cropped the photo and turned it black and white. Then I created a burned border but with no color on the line because I liked the simplicity of it.
For my Aunt- I cropped the image a little and adjusted the coloring in bridge. I did the double fade border. I played around with different colors for the outside like using greens and stuff and but I ended up liking the simple white.

2. Vintage piano- 5/25/11; Bannack; f/ 3.5; 1/120 & f/3.5; 1/5 & f/3.5; 1/30

Bannack Best

1. Masonic Hat- 5/24/11;Bannack; f/4.5; 1/13
2. lantern in Mason room- 5/25/11; Bannack; f/4.0; 1/30
3. wheel of old car- 5/25/11; Bannack; f/ 4.0; 1/1600
4. latch on door- 5/25/11; Bannack; f/4.0; 1/50
5. Mason room- 5/25/11; Bannack; f/ 5.0; 1/60
I was fascinated by the Masonic room and I was really happy with the way most of my photos in that room came out. I cropped and fixed the coloring on all of these photos.

Macro Abstract

1. Detailing on the church seats- 5/25/11; Bannack; f/ 5.0; 1/40
2. Staircase in hotel- 5/25/11; Bannack; f/ 5.6;1/20
For the stair case I took a photo of the side a building and then overlayed it on the straircase to give it a old photo feel. I took the macro image of the detailing of the church chair. I cropped it and adjusted the colors.

Reverse Shallow Depth

I loved the windows at Bannock. To edit these I added lots more saturation as well as cropped them.
1. 5/25/11; Bannock; f/5.6; 1/100
2. 5/25/11; Bannock; f/5.6; 1/640

Acton blurr & freeze

1. Arianne- 5/25/11; Bannock; f/5.6; 1/250
2. Devin- 5/25/11; Bannock; f/20.0; 4.0

For Arianne I cropped the scene because there was some people in it. I also added more saturation and black in it. For Devin this took a lot of trys. It was hard because he had to get up really fast out of that chair while drinking the root beer which made it more challenging then the other ghost pics I did that were more simple to make.

Portraits

1. Girl from other class- 5/25/11; Bannock; f/5.6; 1/100
2. Devin- 5/25/11; Bannock; f/5.6;1/60
3. Girl from other class- 5/25/11; f/5.0; 1/25
I realized that having a little shadow on the face can be very powerful. These shots were really difficult for me to get. I was having a lot of trouble figuring out the lighting. To edit I just adjusted the color adding more saturation, bringing in more darks, and making things sharper. I made Devin's black and white because I felt like it was more powerful that way.

edits

1. REPLACE COLOR:Taylor- 5.22.11; Rexburg, ID.; f/5.6; 1/125
2. MATCH COLOR: Taylor & Logan- 5.22.11; Rexburg, ID.; f/5.6; 1/500
3. EDIT EYE POP: Jamie- 5.21.11; Rexburg, ID.; f/6.3; 1/100
It was difficult to find pictures to do the replace and match color. I am sure it will be helpful down the road but it was difficult to find a picture that worked well and even still for my second picture I wasn't that pleased with it.

portraits

I really loved this assignment. I learned that I have a lottt of learning to do when it comes to photographing people and I thought Sister Esplin did a great job helping me realize that there is so much more to doing portraits then one thinks. I was please with how my shots turned out but I know that I have a lot of practicing to do.
1. Taylor- 5.22.11; Rexburg, ID.; f/5.6; 1/25
I adjusted the coloring in bridge and that is about it.
2. Jamie- 5.21.11; Rexburg, ID.; f/6.3; 1/100
This was by far my favorite shot. I thought it was so perfect and didn't want to do much. I adjusted the coloring a little and then also has a little more bokeh on the right side.
3. Jamie- 5.21.11; Rexburg, ID.; f/6.3; 1/100
I adjusted the coloring in bridge and then cropped the photo.
4. Logan & Taylor- 5.22.11; Rexburg, ID.; f/5.6; 1/120
I adjusted the color and then also put an adjustment brush over her hair for some high light.
5. Logan & Taylor- 5.22.11; Rexburg, ID.; f/5.0;1/200
I just adjusted the lighting in bridge.
6. Emily- 5.21.11; Rexburg, ID.; f/5.6; 1/30

I have discovered that editing wise, my style is really more of a natural look.
